La Coupole in Wizernes was built during World War II by the Nazis to serve as a launch base for V2 rockets. This monumental underground bunker project aimed to fire V2 rockets en masse towards England, initiating a new phase of the war.
The V2 rockets were revolutionary weapons developed by the Germans, possessing tremendous destructive power. With La Coupole as a launch base, they planned to intensively bombard England, expanding the war front effectively.
However, before the project could be completed, La Coupole was bombarded by the Allied forces with Tallboy bombs. These powerful bombs severely damaged the facility, rendering it unusable for the Nazis.
Today, La Coupole serves as a museum, showcasing the history of V2 rocket development and its impact on World War II and space exploration. A visit offers an impressive journey into the past and an opportunity to comprehend the significance of this historical site and the fateful events during the war.
